REFORM in Christianity, RECONSTRUCTION in Islam

Hristiyanlık’ta REFORM, İslam’da TECDÎD

الإصلاح (Reform) في المسيحية، والتجديد (Reconstruction) في الإسلام

Greetings!

On April 17, 2022, a short article of mine titled "Recommendation for Listening to A Conversation of the late Prof. Dr. Yaşar Nuri Öztürk" was published onmunferit.net

The summary and main idea of my article is as follows:

“By comparing the concepts of REFORM in Christianity and RECONSTRUCTION in Islam, I emphasize Prof. Dr. Yaşar Nuri Öztürk's Quran-centered views and the anecdote he recounts from Ahmed Hamdi Aksekili.

I stress the importance of reason and reflection in countering the corruption of religion, emphasizing the need to break free from traditional bigotry and attain accurate Islamic knowledge”.

Due to the importance and timeliness of its content, I am republishing it here.

I hope you read it and find it beneficial.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The subject of religion is a vital one. If it is not learned properly, it becomes a scourge for both the individual and humanity

Indeed, this is what has happened. History is a clear witness to this, and the Holy Quran points to this truth repeatedly.

The role of the CLERGY in making humanity hate and distance itself from religion is immenseThis is an undeniable reality for all religions, including Islam.

Whether it be the CLERGY in JUDAISM and CHRISTIANITY, or the CLASS OF RELIGION IN ISLAM called ULEMA, SHEIKHS, PIRS, MURSHIDS, GHOUSES, the "OWNER OF TIME”, etc.—they have all corrupted religion and caused suffering for humanity for centuries.

If we want to learn the truth, we must use our reason

Allah did not reveal the verse, "Allah places defilement upon those who will not use their reason" (Quran; Yunus 100) in vain.

Unfortunately, what happened to Judaism and Christianity has also happened to Islam over the centuries, starting from the cursed kingdom of the cursed Muawiyah

We need to think deeply about this, dear brothers and sisters.

We cannot see or learn the truths through clichéd and superficial evaluations.

We are obligated to use our reason

We must reflect seriously on the verse: "Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves" (Quran; Ra’d 11).

In the "Cevizkabuğu" talkshow broadcast on Ulusal Kanal which is one of the nationwide tv channels in Turkiye (the link to which I have provided below), the late Prof. Dr. Yaşar Nuri Öztürk shares an anecdote from the late Ahmed Hamdi Akseki (who served as the President of Religious Affairs in the 1950s in Turkiye).

We must seriously consider what the late Akseki said…

As long as we do not realize these truths of vital importance, we Muslims will never, ever be able to pull ourselves together.

If we want to understand our religion correctly, we must use our reason, logic, and conscience properly

I humbly suggest you to listen—attentively—to the late Prof. Dr. Yaşar Nuri Öztürk’s many talks, which are widely available on YouTube.

We must not avoid listening to him just because of trivial, ego-driven excuses like "loyalty to a sect/community/party/group/etc."

He spoke the NAKED TRUTHS with complete bluntness and honesty.

Here is just one example:

In the said Cevizkabuğu talkshow at the link below, the late Prof. Dr. Yaşar Nuri Öztürk provides correct Islamic information SOURCED FROM THE QURAN—information that we have not heard from any other scholar and, I am afraid, will likely not hear for many decades at this rate

I recommend you listen to his talk from beginning to end with full attention and an effort to understand.

Particularly from the 86th minute onwards, he relates a memory from Ahmed Hamdi Akseki, a learned and virtuous man who served as the President of Religious Affairs in the 1950s.

I wholeheartedly agree with the late Akseki’s profound observation regarding the "PITIFUL STATE OF MUSLIMS" in reference to MARTIN LUTHER(*)

(*) Note: Yaşar Nuri Öztürk recounts the following memory about Ahmed Hamdi Aksekili:

At that time, Tahsin Yücel, a young research assistant at Istanbul University's Faculty of Literature, visited Ahmed Hamdi Aksekili, the then President of Religious Affairs of Turkiye, at his office.

During this visit, Ahmed Hamdi Aksekili said the following to the young Tahsin Yücel:

"My son! The Western world was saved from the religious crises it fell into during the Middle Ages thanks to Martin Luther.

However, we have not had a Luther.

Moreover, we need not just one, but several Martin Luthers!"

Yaşar Nuri Öztürk further says that Ahmed Hamdi Aksekili, a great scholar and wise man, made this comparison to argue that Islam, like Martin Luther did in Christianity, needed to be cleansed of traditionalist and superstitious interpretations and understood anew through the direct path of the Qur'an and reason
