THE QUR’AN, CHAPTER FUSSILAT
This chapter consists of 54 verses, was revealed in Mecca, and is the 61st chapter of the Quran, in the order of revelation.
There are 114 chapters in the Quran.
In Islamic tradition, the names of these chapters are generally, either :
- taken from A NOTABLE WORD that appears in that chapter,
- or taken from A TOPIC discussed in that chapter,
- or determined from A SPECIFIC NAME given to that chapter by the PROPHET MUHAMMAD.
This chapter “Fussilat - فُصِّلَتْ" is named after the werb-word "Fussilet," which means in Arabic language "the DETAILED AND the EXPLANATORY”, and because the third verse of it mentions that the Quran is a "Book whose verses are DETAILED AND EXPLANATORY”.
Important Note and Reminder for the Muslims :
We should not read the Qur'an in order to;
- "merely earn a reward out of its reading”,
- "blow/send reward of its recitation onto the souls of our deceased and beloved ancestors for their otherworldly benefit!"
- We should neither make khatm, that is, finish its reading from its beginning till its end ;
- "with the hope and expectation of obtaining the otherworldly reward of doing so!”
On the contrary, we should read the TRANSLATED VERSION-s of Qur'an ;
- in OUR OWN MOTHER TONGUE and
- for the sole and exclusive purpose of understanding, learning and contemplating on the words - messages of our LORD."
- For this is RIGHT and what MUST BE DONE!
- And, because its recitations and its blowings/sendings towards the souls of our deceased ancestors do certainly not provide any sort of otherworldly benefits to them!
ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE CHAPTER FUSSILET
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1:
Ha, Mim.
2:
This is revealed from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful...
3:
This is a BOOK whose verses have been made clear IN ARABIC for a KNOWLEDGEABLE community.
4:
As a bringer of good news and a warner... Yet most of them turn away; they do not listen.
5:
They say, "Our hearts are wrapped in veils against what you call us to, and there is a heaviness in our ears, and a veil between you and us. So you do your work, and we will surely do ours."
6:
Say, "I am only A HUMAN BEING like you. It has been revealed to me that YOUR GOD IS ONE GOD. So turn to Him without wavering and ask His forgiveness. Woe to those who associate others with Him!"
7:
They do not give zakat (ALMS). They are the ones who deny life after death.
8:
As for those who believe and do good deeds, there is a reward for them that will never be denied.
9:
Say, "Do you truly deny the ONE who created the earth in TWO DAYS and associate partners with Him? He is the Lord of the worlds."
10:
He placed mountains upon the earth to provide STABILITY AND STRENGTH. He made it fruitful. And He determined its sustenance in FOUR DAYS, equally for those who ask.
11:
Then He turned to the sky, which was smoke, and said to it and to the earth, "Come willingly or unwillingly." They said, "We come willingly."
12:
So He completed them in TWO DAYS as SEVEN HEAVENS, and revealed to each heaven its function. And We adorned the CLOSEST HEAVEN to the EARTH with LAMPS and a PROTECTION. These are the decrees of the Mighty, the All -Knowing.
13:
If they turn away, say: "I warn you of a thunderbolt like the one that struck “the ʿĀd and the Thamood."
*************
Translator’s Note :
In the Islamic context, the terms ʿĀd and Thamood” refers to two ancient Arab tribes mentioned frequently in the Quran as :
- ʿĀd : The people to whom the Prophet Hud was sent.
- Thamud : The people to whom the Prophet Salih was sent.
**************
14:
Remember when the messengers came to them from before them and from behind them, saying, "Do not worship anyone other than Allah!" They replied, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down angels. Therefore, we do not recognize what you have been sent with."
15:
The people of 'Ad grew arrogant on earth unjustly and said, "Who is mightier than us?" Did they not see that Allah, who created them—yes, He—is mightier than them? They also rejected Our signs.
16:
So We sent upon them a freezing wind on those wretched days to make them taste the humiliation of this worldly life. The punishment of the Hereafter is certainly more humiliating. Moreover, they will find no helper.
17:
As for the Thamood, We guided them, but they PREFERRED BLINDNESS TO GUIDANCE. So the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they had earned.
18:
We saved the believers; they were protected.
19:
The day will come when Allah's enemies will be gathered together in order and driven to the Fire.
20:
When they arrive there, their ears, their skins, and their eyes will testify against them concerning what they used to do.
21:
They will say to their SKINS, "Why did you testify against us?" Their SKINS will say, "Allah, who makes everything speak, made us speak. He created you the first time, and to Him you will be returned."
22:
You did not hide from the testimony your hearing, your eyes, and your skins would bear against you. On the contrary, you thought that Allah did not know many of the things you did.
23:
Indeed, your assumption about your Lord has destroyed you, and you have become among the losers.
24:
Now, if they can endure it, their refuge is the Fire. And if they seek forgiveness and appeasement, their apology will not be accepted.
25:
We surrounded them with relatives and friends, and made everything before and behind them appear attractive to them.
The word that was true for the previous nations of JINNS AND HUMANS became true for them as well. For they were the ones who suffered loss.
26:
Those who disbelieve said, "Do not listen to this Qur'an! Make noise during its recitation so that you may prevail."
27:
By Allah, We will surely make them taste a severe punishment, and We will surely punish them for the worst of what they have done.
28:
This is the Fire, the punishment for Allah's enemies. Because they rejected Our signs, they will have a permanent place there.
29:
Those who disbelieve will say, "Our Lord, show us those who led us astray FROM AMONG THE JINN AND HUMANS, so we may trample them underfoot and make them the lowest of the low."
30:
Indeed, upon those who say, "Our Lord is Allah," and then remain steadfast, angels descend, saying, "Fear not, nor grieve; but receive glad tidings of Paradise which you were promised."
31:
"We are your friends in this world and in the Hereafter. In Paradise you will have therein whatever your souls desire. There is everything you desire for you there.
32:
"As a gift from Allah, the Forgiving, the Merciful..."
33:
Who could speak better than one who calls to Allah, does good deeds, and says, "I AM ONE OF THE MUSLIMS / I AM ONE OF THOSE WHO SUBMIT TO ALLAH"?
34:
Goodness and evil are not equal! Repel evil with what is best. Then you will see that the one who was your enemy has become your warmest friend.
35:
Only those who are patient can achieve such a state. Only those who are greatly blessed can achieve such a state.
36:
If an evil impulse from Satan provokes you, seek refuge in Allah! For He is the best hearer, the best knower...
37:
The NIGHT and the DAY, the SUN and the MOON are among His signs. If you worship only Allah, do not prostrate yourselves to the sun or the moon; prostrate yourselves to Allah, who created them!
38:
If they are arrogant, let them know that those in the presence of your Lord glorify Him night and day without ever tiring.
39:
You see the EARTH humbled and subdued. That is one of Allah's signs. When We send down WATER upon it, it trembles and swells. Undoubtedly, He who gives life to it will surely give life to the dead. He has power over all things.
40:
Those who confuse the truth with falsehood concerning Our signs are not hidden from Us. Now, is he who is cast into the Fire better, or he who comes on the Day of Resurrection secure? Do whatever you wish. He sees well what you do.
41:
They denied the Reminder when it came to them, though it is a Book of supreme excellence.
42:
Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or behind it. It is a revelation from Allah, the Wise, the Praiseworthy.
43:
What is said to YOU is no different from what was said to the MESSENGERS BEFORE YOU. Indeed, your Lord is both Forgiving and the Owner of a painful punishment.
44:
If We had made it A QUR’AN IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE, they would surely have said, "Should its verses not have been detailed? / A foreign language to the Arabs? / Whether in a foreign language or Arabic!" Say, "It is a guide and a healing for those who believe. As for those who disbelieve, there is a heaviness in their ears. And the Qur'an is blindness to them. To such people, it is proclaimed from a place far away.
45:
By God, We gave MOSES THE BOOK, and they disputed about it. If a word from your Lord had not gone forth, the matter would have been settled between them. Undoubtedly, they are in constant doubt about the Qur'an.
46:
Whoever does good, it is for their own benefit. Whoever does evil, it is against themselves. Your Lord never wrongs His servants.
47:
Knowledge of THE HOUR (the Doomsday) is with Allah alone. No fruit emerges from its husk, nor does a female conceive or give birth, except by His knowledge. On the Day He says, "Where are My partners?" they will say, "We declare to you that none of us bears witness."
48:
Those they used to call upon have vanished from them. They realize there is no place to flee.
49:
Man never tires of asking for good. But when harm touches him, he loses hope and is crushed.
50:
If, after a hardship or harm has touched him, We grant him a taste of mercy, he will surely say, "This is my due! I do not believe the Hour will come. Even if I am returned to my Lord, surely there are perfect beauties for me with Him." By God, We will inform those who are ungrateful of what they have done. By God, We will make them taste the severe punishment.
51:
When We bestow a favor upon man, he turns away and withdraws. But when evil touches him, he prays.
52:
Say, "Tell me, if this Qur'an is from Allah and you have concealed it, who is more astray than one who has gone astray from the path?"
53:
We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient for your Lord that He is a witness over all things?
54:
Take heed, they are in doubt concerning their meeting with their Lord. Open your eyes! Allah is All-Encompassing, encompassing all things.
The Exalted Allah has spoken the truth.
