THE UMMAH THAT STRANGLES ITS GENIUSES
THE UMMAH THAT STRANGLES ITS GENIUSES
Peace!
I present below for your consideration an article written by the late Prof. Dr. Yaşar Nuri Öztürk on August 29, 2008, which contains VERY IMPORTANT HISTORICAL OBSERVATIONS for us Muslims.
I hope it serves as a means for those who have read it and those who will read it to benefit from it.
With love and respect,

THE UMMAH THAT STRANGLES ITS GENIUSES
الأمة الإسلامية (المسلمون) التي تخنق عباقرتها
DÂHÎLERİNİ BOĞAN ÜMMET
August 29, 2008
The history of religions is full of betrayals against reason, love, and human rights.
Even Islam, which is the most fortunate religion in this regard, has not remained outside this history of betrayals. Its history, too, is full of betrayals against reason and those who represent reason.
In today's world, the symbolic countries of betrayal against reason are the countries of the geography they call the "Islamic world."
Betrayal of reason is synonymous with betrayal of those who exercise the mind to the highest degree—more clearly put, betrayal of geniuses.
No one thinks of, or ever has thought of, betraying or encroaching upon the mind of the man on the street. What matters are those who use reason as a creative energy to present society with the possibilities to change dimensions. That is, the geniuses.
The primary enemies of those who do not want life and humanity to rise are geniuses. (To put it conversely: THE PRIMARY ENEMIES OF GENIUSES ARE THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT LIFE AND HUMANITY TO RISE).
The unchanging enemy of every kind of genius is FANATIC RELIGIONISM—that is, THOSE WHO DECEIVE WITH GOD.
In Islam, this type is called a "YOBAZ" (fanatic), "MÜRTECÎ" (reactionary), or "MUTAASSIB" (bigot). The terms “reactionary” and “bigot” are rooted in the Quran.
This is because the book that complains most about bigotry and reactionism is the Quran. All reactionaries and bigots should first and foremost be known as enemies of the Quran.
Instead of explaining this truth in the name of secularism and enlightenment, the so-called intellectuals in Turkey blundered by portraying bigotry and reactionism as enemies only to themselves. And as a result, they brought trouble even upon their own heads.
In the last century, two more plagues were added to bigotry and reactionism:
- POLITICAL RELIGIONISM,
- RELIGIONISM OF COLLABORATION WITH THE CRUSADERS.
We shall present this SECOND part of the matter to history and the nation through our work titled "The Priest-Mullah Collaboration in Our Recent History."
Coming to the present time:
The superstition-mongers and political religionists gain prestige by mentioning the name of the Quran, but as an "address," they point not to the destinations the Quran indicates, but to Umayyad-Taliban jurisprudence (fiqh). The destination reached through that jurisprudence is outside the modern age; it is the Taliban's hell. The Quran, however, is a book that calls one to rise above the current age.
Distinguishing the Quran’s proofs that call above the age from its historical proofs (those tied to the time they arrived) is neither the job nor the intention of the political religionists and superstition-mongers. Only the "soldiers of the Quran"—those who do not put shackles on reason—can do that. Unfortunately, for centuries, the Islamic world has not given those soldiers room to breathe.
The evils that populations passing for Muslims have inflicted upon rationalist religious scholars (العلماء الإسلامية العقلانية) have triggered the wrath of Allah. The Almighty has severely punished the Islamic world, which betrayed reason, by leaving the solution of the problems of these taboo-ridden Muslim peoples to the mercy of the CRUSADERS who are enemies of the Declaration of Faith (Kalima-i Shahadat).
Allah is just, and the punishment is of the same nature as the deed (الجزاء من جنس العمل).
Let us give one of the most striking examples:
Two great rationalist geniuses of Islamic legal history, the Shafi'i jurist Qadi Abduljabbar (d. 415/1024) and the Hanbali jurist Najmuddin al-Tufi (d. 716/1316), declared centuries ago:
"All rulings in the Quran, except for objective values, trans-temporal values, and fundamental principles, are historical. By prioritizing the 'Principle of Maslahat' (the principle of public interest), new legal regulations should be made accordingly."
- These vital theses by Tufi and Abduljabbar were HIDDEN by the sultanates of superstition that are enemies of reason; these theses, which would have brightened the fate of the Muslim masses, were neutralized. The entry of these theses into the lives of Muslims only became possible more than a thousand years after Abduljabbar and seven hundred years after Tufi, thanks to the War of Independence and Enlightenment led by Gazi Mustafa Kemal, who paved the way for the Turk-Islam enlightenment. Atatürk did not just say exactly what these geniuses of jurisprudence said; he put those words into practiceas well.
What Mustafa Kemal did in Turkey in the twentieth century was exactly what Abduljabbar, Tufi, and similar Islamic thinkers wanted to do.
As a child of the "Islamic faith," I believe this:
The day Muslims see the reality presented by our assessment of Mustafa Kemal and do what is necessary, the Islamic world will take its place at the head of the caravan of humanity, just like their earliest rationalist ancestors.
The imperialist West, which is an enemy of Islam, knows all of this. It is because they know it that they have tailored all their efforts to destroy the legacy of Mustafa Kemal.
According to Abduljabbar and Tufi, all determinations of the Quran regarding "instrumental" (vesâil) rulings are historical.
Today, looking at where humanity has arrived, it is necessary to RESTRUCTURE (attn! NOT REFORM!) by going to the five fundamental addresses pointed out by the Quran: [1. THE QURAN, 2. REASON, 3. SCIENCE, 4. NATURAL LAWS (i.e., SUNNATULLAH, i.e., FATE), and 5. MA’RÛF (UNIVERSAL HUMAN VALUES)]***
In opening the way for this restructuring and creating its opportunities and atmosphere, the most reliable remedy and greatest chance is SECULARISM (Laiklik).
To embrace the age and reason through religion by going to these five (5) fundamental addresses, Turkey must escape the pincer of both "those who deceive by using the name of Allah" and the "denial that despises religion."
The Turkish people must be saved from THESE TWO FOOLISH PINCERS—one that declares anyone saying "Allah" an "enemy of secularism," and the other that declares anyone saying "I am secular" an "enemy of religion." This cannot be done with speeches delivered merely in university corridors. There is a need for a brand-new political project with a philosophical backbone and a new cadre clustered around this project.
And there is a need for a people who have "become conscious through their own suffering" to mandate that cadre.
These are the two fundamental values Turkey needs as much as air and water. Turkey must realize this swiftly. Otherwise, the period ahead will be a very painful time.
The attitude of the West at this point is extremely dangerous.
The West absolutely does not want the Turkish people to claim ownership of themselves and their future. This is why they constantly oppose Atatürk.
Atatürk represents "reason in operation" against "shackled reason" in the Islamic world.
The policies developed by the West regarding Turkey are POLICIES THAT UNDERMINE SECULARISM TO PREVENT MUSLIMS FROM CAPTURING THE 'OPERATING REASON.'
The West knows that without operating reason coming into play, you cannot benefit an atom's weight from the Quran. Because the book that says, "Allah places defilement upon those who will not use their reason," is the Quran (Yunus, 100).
To summarize, it is impossible for true Islam to have a problem with modern life. As for the understanding exemplified on the streets and taught to us in mosques as religion, it is impossible for it to be compatible with—not just modern life—but any value that makes a human a human.
This "FABRICATED ISLAM" is a hump on our backs. When we cast this off our backs and meet the luminous world of the Quran, we will gain the opportunity to be at peace with God, with nature, and with our own selves.
